Chapter 11

Andrew

The first thing that hit me was the noise. It was a constant thrum of traffic punctuated with the sharp screech of horns and sirens. Even from up here in my twentieth floor office, I couldn’t escape the noise. It wasn’t just noise outside. The noise was inside, too. Phones ringing. People talking. A coffee grinder was whirring loudly in the distance. It was just so much noise.

The second thing was the smell. There wasn’t a single place to get a breath of fresh air. When I had left the airport, I was hit with the smell of smog and exhaust. How in the world was that healthy?

Within the first day, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt what I wanted to do: I was going to move headquarters to Redenville. It could be done. Companies relocated all the time. I would keep a New York office for people who really wanted to stay. But the new headquarters would breathe life into Redenville. In addition to a corporate building, I’d work on building new housing. Luxury apartments and condos, as well as some single family housing.

It would be amazing for the town.

I had already done some preliminary research on locations and had the perfect solution. Plans had started formulating in my head, but now it was time to put things into action.

“Hey, Lindsey,” I called out to my assistant whose desk sat outside my door.

“What’s up, boss?”

“Could you schedule a leadership meeting for this afternoon? Try and find a time when we’re all free, but if there isn’t a time, this is a top priority and people will have to bump things.”

“Absolutely, I’ll get that on the calendar now.”

It was time to talk with leadership about this, which would set a whole host of things in motion. It occurred to me that I’d have to find longer term housing for Ellie and me. I really liked the rental we were staying in and was curious if the owner’s would sell. For the right price, of course.

My next few days just got a lot busier, but it was time to do this. I couldn’t wait to get details down so I could go home-home–and tell Kayla.
